Extending the Scope of Analysing Data of Iea Studies: Applying Multilevel Modelling Techniques to Analyse Timss Data

چکیده
The traditional approach in analysing IEA data has been to use single-level statistical models. This paper argues that multilevel modelling offers a wider spectrum in analysing IEA data because of multi-stage sampling, since students are nested within classes, classes within schools, and schools within countries. Two illustrative examples are used to provide support to this argument. In the first example, TIMSS 1999 data concerning students’ achievement and their self-perceptions in two subjects (i.e., Mathematics and Science) were analysed using single and multi-level analyses. While single-level analysis resulted in positive correlations at the microlevel and negative correlations at the macro-level, the findings of multi-level analysis did not support such contradictory relationships. In the second example multi-level modelling techniques were used to analyse TIMSS data related to student achievement in Mathematics. A large number of variables taken from the student, teacher and school questionnaires and which were associated with the theoretical models of Educational Effectiveness Research were added to the model, explaining about 40% of the variance of student achievement. The results of the study are discussed in terms of the importance of using multi-level modelling in analysing IEA data. Methodological issues concerning the design of comparative studies in education are also raised.

Explanatory models based on TIMSS 1999 and TIMSS 2011 data
The aim of this study is to explore student, classroom and school factors behind mathematics achievement of the Finnish secondary school students. What are the background factors most strongly related to achievement in Finnish educational context, and what are the changes in the explanatory models between TIMSS 1999 and TIMSS 2011? The conceptual framework for this study is based upon the IEA t...

Apart from the international comparative data and analysis that International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) studies traditionally provide, there is also an opportunity for countries to include national options that may enrich a country’s knowledge in a focus area. This paper reports on research that was conducted by including a national option in IEA’s TIMSS’99...

Background A review of the literature on how school-level factors were, and still are, used to predict and interpret student performance in some of the IEA studies—i.e., PIRLS, TIMSS, and ICCS—showed that it is quite difficult to find strong associations between school-level Abstract Background: The present study investigates what factors related to the school context influence student achievem...
متن کاملAnalysis of interactions among barriers in project risk management
In the context of the scope, time, cost, and quality constraints, failure is not uncommon in project management. While small projects have 70% chances of success, large projects virtually have no chance of meeting the quadruple constraints. While there is no dearth of research on project risk management, the manifestation of barriers to project risk management is a less dwelt topic. The success...
متن کاملAnalyzing data from educational surveys: a comparison of HLM and Multilevel IRT
Introduction During the last two decades, there has been an increased focus on educational quality and learning outcomes in the world. International educational surveys like TIMSS, PIRLS and PISA have provided a basis for assessing educational quality on different levels and corresponding influential factors. Using information provided by such large scale assessment, participating countries can...
